Orange151 started as an inside joke between myself and my brother Tom in 2003. A Sophomore in Graphic Design at Kansas State at the time, I was working with him and his new design firm, trying to pass off a fun summer in the Northwest as an actual internship.
But I actually learned stuff. More than I ever would have learned in a classroom. You see, they don't teach you how to talk with a client, how to make a proposal, and how to actually have passion for the job you do.
One Beer Friday, we were kicking back in the office, talking about cool business names. I mentioned how I was a fan of businesses that had colors in them, like Blue Iguana. I liked Orange, and we opened up a Pantone Color Book (A book for designers that shows color formulas for printing, and has a number assigned to each hue).

We hand-deliver cookies to our clients on Valentine's Day.
Just kidding.
we only do this to ex-clients. |
"Dude, check out Orange - 151! That's a really good color!" We both looked at each other, I bought the domain name, and the rest stuck.
I came home, realized my Graphic Design degree was going nowhere, switched to my passion- Art History, and became president of the K-State student-run web agency. When that agency was re-commissioned by faculty, I picked up some of their clients, took a deep breath, and started a business. Years later, and many sleepless nights researching programming techniques and Search Engine strategies, I feel as if this business has learned more effectively and grown more than most others in this industry.
The bottom line - I'm self taught, and rarely do I hire anyone else who isn't. It's this that I think makes the difference between Orange151 and other companies. It's a whole different way of working with our clients... We don't "speak geek" just so that you think we know our stuff, or make you feel stupid for not understanding how to set up your Outlook. We will do what it takes so that you understand what we're all doing together, and that you are happy with your website.
After all... it IS your website. Not ours.
Take care,
-Andrew
